Yes — it's one of the better-proven herbal joint remedies. Multiple trials find standardized boswellia extract eases knee-osteoarthritis pain and stiffness about as well as anti-inflammatory drugs, often with gentler effects on the stomach.

What the evidence shows

Boswellia's standout claim, and it's well-earned: multiple independent meta-analyses of RCTs find standardized Boswellia serrata extract (often the AKBA-enriched forms Aflapin/5-Loxin) reduces knee-osteoarthritis pain and improves function, with a favourable safety profile versus NSAIDs. One of the better-evidenced herbal joint remedies.

Cochrane review 2014 · high-quality evidence (Boswellia arm: 2 studies, 85 participants) Agrees with our grade

Small total sample; the review's headline conclusion emphasises the ASU product. Boswellia-specific effect sizes need the full text.

“Oral herbal therapies for treating osteoarthritis (Cochrane CD002947.pub2, 2014). Meta-analysis was restricted to Boswellia serrata (monoherbal) and avocado-soyabean unsaponifiables. Five studies of three Boswellia serrata extracts were included; 'High-quality evidence from two studies (85 participants) indicated that 90 days treatment with 100 mg of enriched Boswellia' improved osteoarthritis outcomes.”

Why we agree: we reached the same direction independently, from our own appraisal of 13 sources. Two methods landing in the same place is a stronger signal than either alone.

What is Cochrane, and why trust it?

Cochrane produces systematic reviews: instead of running a new study, they gather every trial ever done on a question, judge how well each was run, and pool the results. They take no commercial or industry funding, which is why the medical community treats their reviews as a gold standard — and why we check our own verdicts against theirs.
