Three studies touch on this and none of them ran the experiment. For all the pesticide warning that exists, nobody appears to have tested whether it changes what people actually buy. The one real-world study found shoppers bought visibly stained tomatoes anyway, because they had no alternative.

This claim matters because if residue warnings reduce how much fruit and veg people eat, the messaging could cost more health than the residues do. It is essentially untested. No study has experimentally manipulated a pesticide-risk message and measured downstream produce consumption or purchasing.
