Pretty much. On its own curcumin is barely absorbed — it's cleared before it can do much. Piperine, the compound in black pepper, blocks that clearance and boosted curcumin absorption roughly 20-fold in the classic study, which is why supplements pair the two.

What the evidence shows

The fact that underpins every other curcumin claim: on its own, curcumin is poorly absorbed — rapidly metabolized and cleared, so little reaches the blood. Piperine (from black pepper) blocks that clearance and raised curcumin bioavailability ~2000% in the landmark human study, which is why nearly all effective trials use piperine-combined or specially-formulated curcumin, not plain turmeric.
